Changing times at Real Madrid

Real Madrid have reportedly been given the green light to begin work on a stunning revamp of the Bernabéu stadium.

A report by AS now claims that planning permission has been granted by Madrid City Council on Wednesday for work to start on the redevelopment, which is set to cost €575m.

A large metallic shell will be built around the stadium as part of the work with a retractable roof also added. Other facilities, including a hotel, will also form part of the new look Bernabéu.

Real are said to want to begin the construction work in May. Having seen the planning permission certificate, AS also report that the redevelopment is due to be completed in little over three years. They do add, however, that the timescale is more likely to be between four and five years.

The building permit also adds that the capacity of the stadium is expected to remain almost exactly  the same – dropping by just one from 80,243 to 80,242.

The news comes at a time where reports claim Real are set to overhaul their playing squad following Zinedine Zidane’s return to the club. Kylian Mbappe has already been named as one potential summer arrival, with Napoli’s Kalidou Koulibaly also linked as a possible replacement for Raphael Varane, should he choose to depart at the end of the season.
