Everyone’s got their favourite sporting nickname, but some of them are smarter than others.
We love ‘One Size Fitz Hall’ and Gordon ‘Jukebox’ Durie, but others feel less impressive, like those which are essentially someone’s first name or surname with an extra syllable tagged on to the end.
Or, y’know, the ones that are literally just part of a full name.

Dutch darts player Raymond van Barneveld is an enigma, the sort of man who is so universally popular that he has been given a whole two nicknames over his career.
Darts has the likes of ‘Snakebite’, ‘The Count’ and ‘Jackpot’, among others, but the Netherlands native commands more attention than that.
He is known to most of his fans as ‘Barney’, due to his purple and green skin, popularity with children and love of song, though critics have claimed it’s because he’s so old it feels as though he’s a dinosaur of the game.
