Prince William celebrates with John Carew as Aston Villa clinch promotion

Aston Villa are back in the Premier League

After a three-year absence, Aston Villa have secured their return to the top flight of English football.

Their 2-1 victory over Derby County in Monday’s Championship Play-Off Final, a year after losing to Fulham in the same game, saw Dean Smith’s side clinch promotion.

Goals from Anwar El Ghazi and John McGinn – courtesy of a goalkeeping howler from Kelle Roos – saw Villa build a two-goal lead.

Though Villa appeared on the brink of a top flight return after the second, the lead was halved with ten minutes of normal time remaining as Jack Marriott pulled one back for Frank Lampard’s side.

Though it proved to be nothing more than a consolation, the final stages were nervy for all connected with Villa – including their most famous supporter.

Prince William was in attendance at Wembley for the game, cameras picking him out looking anxious as the final seconds ticked away.
