Premier League handed big boost in bid to end illegal streaming

This could affect anyone with a Kodi box

This could change how a lot of people consume football.

The Premier League’s quest to end illegal streaming of the division’s games has been handed a big boost.

The High Court have issued a blocking order which means that internet service providers in the United Kingdom will be required to prevent customers from watching Premier League games on illegal streams.

The High Court issue follows on from a rise in usage of Kodi boxes. The device itself is legal, but it does not prevent users from downloading software that enables them to stream subscription channels for free.

According to Kevin Plumb, the Premier League’s Director of Legal Services, the blocking order is a “game-changer” in the fight against illegal streams.

“It will allow us to quickly and effectively block and disrupt the illegal broadcast of Premier League football via any means, including so called ‘pre-loaded Kodi boxes’,” Plumb told the Telegraph.

In 2015, Sky Sports and BT Sport paid over five billion pounds between them for the rights to televise the division’s games, with the deal due to end in 2019. With so much money involved, such an action to prevent illegal streams won’t come as a surprise.
