Mesut Özil appears to mock Arsenal after Man City thrashing

Absolutely brutal

Mesut Özil appeared to mock his former side Arsenal after they were thrashed 5-0 by Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

It was a historic defeat for Arsenal, as they have now lost their first three league games of a season for the first time since 1954-55. As Rodri slotted the fourth goal in, Arsenal fans were celebrating, maybe out of frustration, maybe because it is one small step closer to Mikel Arteta getting the sack.

Arteta looked a broken man in his post-match interview, as it becomes increasingly clear that the ‘process’ Arsenal fans have been asked to ‘trust’ doesn’t really exist.

‘Trust the process’ has now become a stick to beat Arsenal with. A meme, rather than a genuinely positive mantra. And Mesut Özil, who was frozen out under Arteta, appears to have joined in on the mockery.

Now at Fenerbahçe in Turkey, Özil wrote: “Trust the process” accompanied by a broken heart emoji and a sad face.

There is the possibility that he is expressing genuine sympathy, and calling on fans to actually trust the process. But that feels unlikely, given the bitter end to his time in North London and his fractious relationship with Arteta.

The response from Arsenal fans to Özil’s tweet was mixed, with some fans so accepting of Arsenal’s bleak reality that they have no option but to laugh, and others criticising his ‘childish’ behaviour.

“I feel so embarrassed for Ozil. Acting like a child – really tarnishes his relationship. He’s irrelevant to Arsenal but still likes to talk about them. Embarrassing,” one fan responded.
