One of the most popular football streaming sites has been shut down by the courts

The end of an era

JOE

Why, exactly, are we doing a story about a website being closed down for illegally streaming football matches?

It’s not like any JOE reader would ever dream of watching a football match on such a site, is it?

Still, seeing as you’re here, we might as well carry on.

Over in Spain, courts have ruled that live streaming website Rojadirecta must close, bringing an end to one of the most popular sites of his kind.

Many a football fan would use Rojadirecta to find links to streamed footage of live football, with the website attracting as many as 40 million hits a month when in its prime.

Having managed to avoid closure on the grounds that it had never hosted any copyrighted material, a Madrid court ruling demanded that the site was taken down last year.

Now the courts have ordered that Rojadirecta cease all illegal live streaming activity – both on their site and on similar ones. On top of this, the courts have ordered that Rojadirecta’s parent company, Puerto 80 Projects, pay compensation to broadcasters such as Movistar+ and Canal+.

According to 101greatgoals, a compensation fee for the broadcasters has yet to be determined.

It appears that any hopes of Rojadirecta surviving this latest ruling are incredibly slim.
