Wonderful news as Nick Blackwell awakes from his coma

Boxer Nick Blackwell has woken from his coma after more than a week in intensive care.

The 25-year-old suffered bleeding on the skull following his fight against Chris Eubank Jr on March 26, but doctors have been able to gradually wake him.

According to a press release from promoters Hennessy Sports, Blackwell ‘acknowledged the voices of loved ones and, by Sunday, was starting to talk’.

Former British middleweight champion Blackwell has received support from across the boxing world, and the promoters took time to thank those who wished him well.

‘It has been overwhelming at times and has certainly not gone unnoticed,’ they said.

Tyson Fury was among those to show support for the Trowbridge fighter, while David Haye pledged to support Blackwell with 10% of the ticket sales from his upcoming fight against Arnold Gjergjaj.

Blackwell spent almost seven days in an induced coma after collapsing moments after the fight against Eubank Jr, before waking on Sunday and speaking with brother Dan and close friend Jake (pictured above).
