MLS star Giovinco scores nine-minute hat-trick in front of watching Lampard (Video)

Eight goals, two missed penalties and a nine-minute hat-trick – New York City FC’s game against Toronto provided Frank Lampard with plenty of food for thought.

The England international wasn’t fit enough to make his debut for NYC, but watched from the stands as his new team-mates raced into an early 2-0 lead only for Sebastian Giovinco to score three times just before the break.

Referee Ted Unkel gave an incredible four penalties in just over an hour, with Giovinco and David Villa each missing one and scoring one.

Giovinco has impressed in MLS all season, scoring twice in a win over DC United in June, and he is the second highest scorer in the league with 11 goals in 17 games.

Lampard will have been impressed with his opponent, but the match might have reminded him more of the madcap 4-4 he was involved in when Chelsea met Liverpool in the 2009 Champions League.
