Michael Carrick named new Man United captain, but fans are more excited at their new vice captain

With Wayne Rooney returning to Everton, Manchester United's new captain has been named as Michael Carrick.

The soon-to-be 36-year-old, who had his testimonial at Old Trafford at the end of the season, is the longest serving player at United following Rooney's departure and the only remaining member of the club's last European Cup success in Moscow nine years ago to still be on the playing staff. “It feels great and it is such a huge honour to captain such a great club,” Carrick told MUTV. “It is my 12th year [at United] now and I came as a 25 year old. I never thought I could be here for so long and achieve so much. "Now, to lead the boys and look after the young boys, to guide them in some ways, it is a nice thing and a real pleasure. I came to this club as a footballer and I am now a huge fan. I have grown to love the club over the years and to be in this position is very special for me.” Although the decision might seem a logical one when all of the above is considered, many United fans were slightly surprised that the captaincy was not handed to Carrick's fellow midfielder, Ander Herrera. The Spaniardis was, however, reportedly given the vice captaincy.  With Carrick not at an age where he can start every single match, this means Herrera will inevitably be wearing the armband for much of the new campaign.
