Although the decision might seem a logical one when all of the above is considered, many United fans were slightly surprised that the captaincy was not handed to Carrick's fellow midfielder, Ander Herrera.
The Spaniardis was, however, reportedly given the vice captaincy. With Carrick not at an age where he can start every single match, this means Herrera will inevitably be wearing the armband for much of the new campaign.
Herrera is a hugely popular player amongst United's supporters and the prospect of him stepping in to the role of club captain on a regular basis appears to have excited fans more than the news that Carrick has been named club captain.
