Martin Keown claims Louis van Gaal “killed” Luke Shaw

Kevin Beirne

Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has been scathing about Manchester United boss Louis Van Gaal’s treatment of Luke Shaw last year, insisting the left-back “has to be given a chance to prove himself.”

Speaking to 888sport.com the former hardman defender berates Dutch coach, saying: “Van Gaal killed him a bit last season by saying he wasn’t fit. He’s a young boy and impressionable.”

Keown also offers his thoughts on Chris Smalling and how a simple tactical move has revitalised the United defender’s game.

“Switching him from the left to the right side of defence has been critical because he needs to be on his right foot in possession. If he’s not it affects his whole game.

Towards the end of the season he played for England on his left side and I saw the same old indecision return.”
