Manchester United’s recent announcement about Romelu Lukaku is embarrassing

JOE

Ed Wodward will love this.

Football fans are relatively easy to please. If a player performs well for a club, earns their wages and refuses to ever join the local rivals, they’ll pretty much be loved for life.

If a player does all these things, fans ultimately couldn’t give a rats ass about how much money was spent their astronomical transfer fees and wages.

This being said, everyone loves statistics and we’re absolute suckers for stats based on assists, goals, distance and pretty much everything under the sun.

Hell, Fantasy Premier League is essentially dictated by these things.

Statisticians measure everything about the beautiful game, but this record breaking stat about Romelu Lukaku’s signing was something that Ed Woodward would have been proud of.

After announcing the move, United’s social media activity went into overdrive and as the club stated, Lukaku has “carved out a small piece of history by breaking a club social media record. Saturday morning’s tweet that announced a transfer fee had been agreed with Everton is now @ManUtd’s most retweeted post of all time, with over 93,000 fans sharing it on Twitter. The previous record was held by Lukaku’s friend Paul Pogba and the first official photo of him wearing the United kit following his return to Old Trafford last summer (with over 88K retweets).”

It continues “Meanwhile, on the club’s Instagram account, the same Lukaku announcement (transfer fee agreed) is now also our second-most liked post of all time with over 869,000 likes. That is just behind the trophy-lift photo from the successful UEFA Europa League final in Stockholm, Sweden, back in May.”
