Man Utd considering Marc Overmars for Director of Football role

Former Arsenal winger Overmars is one of five candidates for United

Here we go again. Not for the first time in recent years, Manchester United are said to be considering appointing the club's very first director of football. After more than a few frankly embarrassing transfer windows, supporters have repeatedly called for the club to bring in someone - anyone - to take charge of transfer business instead of Ed Woodward et al. Although reports have regularly claimed the club are close to hiring a DoF, no such appointment has taken place. With that in mind, perhaps it's best to take the news that Marc Overmars is one of five men being considered by United for the role with a generous pinch of salt. The former Arsenal winger has held a similar position at Ajax in recent years, working closely alongside former United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar. With the Glazer family said to be concerned by United's poor recruitment record in recent windows (well done for finally noticing, fellas), Overmars, who famously scored a crucial goal for Arsenal against United in the 1998 title race, has been added to a five-man shortlist. Luis Campos and Paul Mitchell are also believed to feature on the list for United. Campos is widely regarded as one of the best in the business following the work he's done at Ligue 1 clubs Monaco and Lille. Mitchell used to work underneath Mauricio Pochettino at Southampton and Tottenham (make of that what you will) before moving to RB Leipzig, and then joining Monaco in June of this year.
