Stand down, City fans

Manchester City fans were thrown into a state of panic on Monday night after the Washington Post tweeted that ‘Haaland’ had broken a fibula.

The American newspaper inadvertently caused havoc among the City fanbase with the post, before supporters quickly realised that the publication in fact meant the US interior secretary Debra Haaland.

“It is unclear the severity of Haaland’s injury, where on the fibula the break occurred, or how long it may take for it to heal,” the paper tweeted.

Given that the paper excluded the politician’s first name, some City fans started to panic, with some admitting that they thought it was their new striker Erling Haaland.

How did social media react?

One Twitter user joked: “Changing my FPL team now”.

Another added: “On the bright side, it’s not Erling Haaland. Must use full names in these headlines. Pep was probably freaking.”

A third stated: “Cant believe it man”.

Another added: “Yall have no idea how much you just sent the football world into a frenzy”.

A fifth – an Arsenal fan – claimed: “Well, they’re not get Jesus back so”.

Another wrote: “I thought y’all were talking about Erling Haaland for a sec”.

Meanwhile, City – with a fully fit Haaland in their ranks – arrived in the United States ahead of their summer tour two days ago.

The striker arrived at the Etihad Stadium from Borussia Dortmund this summer for a fee amounting to around £51m. During his time in the Bundesliga, he registered 86 goals and 23 assists in 89 matches.
