Ruben Amorim has reached a verbal agreement in principle with Liverpool, according to reports.
Sky Germany reports that the Sporting CP manager has reached an agreement "in principle" to join the Reds in the summer.
However, sources in Liverpool have refuted the reports.
Amorim had also been Bayern Munich's managerial shortlist, and has an exit clause for this summer in his contract with Sporting.
The 39-year-old has won plaudits this season by guiding his Sporting team to the top of the Portuguese Primeira Liga table, with the Lisbon side on course to win the title.
The former Benfica and Portuguese international midfielder took over at Sporting CP in 2020, and guided the club to a double of the Taça da Liga and the Primeira Liga, ending the latter’s 19-year league title drought.
He has been linked with the Anfield job ever since Jurgen Klopp announced he would be stepping down at the end of the season after nine years at the club.
But he became one of the favourites for the position after front-runner Xabi Alonso announced he would be staying put at Bayer Leverkusen this summer, ruling himself out of contention for the Liverpool job.
Amorim’s high pressing style of play is very similar to the way Liverpool currently operate under Klopp - as is the speed of Sporting’s play and how direct they are.
