Leading from Daniel Sturridge's sumptuous curling effort at the break, it seemed Liverpool were destined to leave Basel with the Europa League trophy.
That was until Alberto Moreno stepped in.
Despite carrying virtually no threat in the first half Sevilla were gifted the chance to equalise thanks to some utterly rubbish defending from Liverpool's left-back immediately after the restart.
A weak defensive header, followed by a feeble attempt at a tackle allowed Mariano to roll the ball across the six yard box to Kevin Gameiro who was never going to miss.
Forty five minutes of superiority undone by a man doing nothing to support the theory that some full-backs are nothing more than failed wingers.
Sevilla went on to assert their grip on the game running out 3-1 winners.
Liverpool's supporters were in no doubt as to where the blame for the defeat lay.
