Jesse Lingard could still leave Manchester United on season-long loan

Simon Lloyd

Hang in there. Manchester United aren’t done yet

There we were, naively thinking we were done with Manchester United transfer stories for a little while. Well, not quite.

After an eventful deadline day, now comes news that another of their first team squad members could be set for a season-long loan abroad.

Jesse Lingard was widely expected to leave United over the summer and has been briefly linked with transfers to Italy or Tottenham, where former United boss Jose Mourinho is a big admirer. Such moves, however, have failed to materialise.

Despite the closure of the window for the majority of the world, it does appear Lingard could still be on his way. A tweet from ESPN’s Rob Dawson reminds us that the transfer window is still indeed open in Portugal, and that FC Porto are showing interest in taking Lingard on a season-long loan.

Whether a deal is agreed remains to be seen, but Porto’s willingness to reduce their initial asking price for Alex Telles, who moved in the opposite direction on Monday, might help with negotiations.

As well as Telles, United signed Edinson Cavani on deadline day, as well as completing the signings of teenage wingers Facundo Pellistri and Amad Diallo.

Leaving the club, Chris Smalling was finally able to complete a permanent move to AS Roma. Alexis Sanchez was United’s only other major permanent departure in the window, completing a move to Inter Milan several weeks ago. Joining them in Italy are Diogo Dalot and Andreas Pereira, who have been loaned to AC Milan and Lazio respectively.
