Kalvin Phillips admits Leeds promotion was better than winning treble with Man City

‘That’s definitely one of the best moments of my life so far’

Kalvin Phillips has admitted that winning promotion with boyhood club Leeds was better than winning the Treble with Manchester City.

Phillips came through the ranks at the Yorkshire club but left to join Man City at the start of the 2022/2023 season after helping to secure survival with Leeds on the final day of the previous campaign.

After playing an important role in both promotion and their top flight campaigns, the England international decided to make the move to Pep Guardiola’s side but found life at the Etihad Stadium difficult.

Alongside injuries, Phillips found it difficult to find game time, making just 21 appearances in all competitions and only starting in two of City’s league games.

Despite that, the 27-year-old was part of the historical side that would become the first English club since Manchester United in 1999 to complete a domestic Treble, winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League.

While many would consider that to be the pinnacle of their career, Phillips admitted that winning promotion with Leeds was a better feeling.

Speaking exclusively to JOE’s Unfiltered podcast, he said: “Just because I’m a Leeds boy and I played for Leeds for so many years, when we got promoted that was an unbelievable feeling. A feeling you can’t explain.

“To finally get us over the line was unbelievable. That’s definitely one of the best moments of my life so far and the next best moment was the parade the moment after we won the Treble. That was so crazy.”

Phillips then added that City’s Treble parade was made better by one thing all Mancunians can resonate with: bad weather.

“It was crazy, it was so good.

“We went out and didn’t expect it to be raining that badly and everyone was just tops off, swinging it about and it was just brilliant.”
