Jose Mourinho hints at central midfield role for Victor Lindelöf

Versatile

Ideally, Jose Mourinho would like to add another new face or two to his Manchester United squad this summer.

With Victor Lindelöf, Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic already through the door, he’s made little secret of the fact he’d like to bring in a wide player – a point he emphasised again while speaking ahead of United’s Premier League opener against West Ham on Sunday.

Mourinho did explain, however, that the versatility of some of his squad meant that the prospect of the transfer window closing without United making any further signings didn’t concern him too much.

While explaining how he’d like to bring in a winger, he suggested Lindelöf, who was signed from Benfica earlier in the summer to help bolster United’s defence, could be deployed in a midfield role if required to.

“Victor can play right back and can play central midfield, we’ve also got a central midfielder [Matic], we got a striker [Lukaku]…

“But we have players and if we cannot strengthen the team in these areas we have people we can trust and go for it.”

United’s game with West Ham on Sunday afternoon (4pm kick off) will close the opening round of this season’s Premier League fixtures.
