Jose Mourinho has been announced as the new manager of Italian giants Roma, just weeks after losing his job at Tottenham.

The club made the announcement that Mourinho will be joining them ahead of next season on their Twitter page on Tuesday.

Roma currently sit seventh in the Italian Serie A after a disappointing season and look set to be without European football next season.

The move sees Mourinho return to the country where he experienced arguably his greatest achievement in winning the treble with Inter Milan in 2010.

Roma will be hoping that the Special One can replicate this level of success, and guide them back to former glories.

The announcement comes just days after the ex-Chelsea, Real Madrid and Manchester United manager had said that he would ‘wait to be back in football” and that next season may be “premature” for a return to management.

Per the Metro, Mourinho said: “I am going on with my normal life. I feel fresh. I feel calm. I am on holiday.

“I have more time to be doing my homework and analysis. I’ll wait to be back in football. Not just for the right club, but for the right culture. Maybe next season is premature, we will see.”

Roma have suffered a disappointing couple of years since reaching the Champions League semi-finals in 2018, having finished outside of the Champions League qualification spots last season, and currently sitting in seventh in Serie A this season.

Whilst they have made the semi-finals of the Europa League, they were demolished in the first leg by Manchester United and trail 6-2 on aggregate going into the second leg.

However, as the most successful club from Italy’s capital they remain one of the biggest names in Italian and European football.

Speaking about his appointment as manager of Roma, the Portuguese manager said: “After meetings with the ownership, I immediately understood the full extent of their ambitions for AS Roma. The incredible passion of the Roma fans convinced me to accept the job and I cannot wait to start next season. Daje Roma!”

Mourinho has reportedly signed a contract until June 2024.

With Juventus looking to win their Italian title back from Antonio Conte’s Inter Milan, AC Milan also resurgent this season, and now the news about Mourinho back in the league, Serie A looks like it could be a cracker next season!
