Jordan Pickford mocked by Thibaut Courtois for his height

The Goalkeepers' Union has seen better days

What ever happened to goalkeepers defending goalkeepers?

Thibaut Courtois may not be the most loyal member of the so-called Goalkeepers’ Union as he has mocked England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for his attempts to stop Adnan Januzaj’s shot during Thursday evening’s Group G decider.

Pickford got no more than a fingertip to Januzaj’s curling effort shortly after half-time which ultimately saw Belgium finish top of the group.

Debate has raged since the game over which hand Pickford should have used to claw at the sumptuous shot, with ITV pundit Gary Neville leading the claims that the Everton stopper should have reached with his right hand, rather than his left.

Belgium No 1 Courtois has boasted that he would have had no problem taking the ball into his grasp because, being five inches taller than the Englishman, he would not have been stretching to get a hand to the ball.

The Chelsea ‘keeper has mocked Pickford for not only being too short but also for the manner in which he took to the air.

“The goalkeeper is 10cm smaller than me,” Courtois said, as quoted by Voetbal 24.

“I would have caught it.

“He was too busy throwing his legs in the air.”

While many consider it an error on Pickford’s part, there is no chance that he will be dropped for England’s Round of 16 clash with Colombia next Tuesday.
