It is with great sadness that we report that Jonah Lomu, the legendary New Zealand rugby union player, has passed away.
Former All Blacks doctor John Mayhew confirmed that Lomu had died unexpectedly in Auckland. He was only 40 years old.
In 1995, Lomu was diagnosed with nephrotic syndrome, a serious kidney disorder. In 2003, he was put on dialysis three times a week due to deterioration in his kidney function. The following year he underwent a kidney transplant.
He is regarded by many as the first true global superstar of rugby union, and his fame and aura transcended the sport.
