“Due to a medical issue involving strawweight athlete Jessica Aguilar, the New York State Athletic Commission has cancelled her scheduled bout against Jodie Esquibel. Tonight’s UFC FIGHT NIGHT card will proceed with 12 bouts, beginning at 6:55 pm ET / 3:55 pm PT.”
The New York State Athletic Commission made the call to pull Aguilar from the card due to a medical concern. The former WSOF champion explained in an Instagram post that concerns were raised about having chapped lips due to cutting weight. She claims she got clearance from a doctor only to be told the day of the fight that it wouldn't be going ahead.
"I had all my medicals, everything was good. The commission here said I had something on my lip. My lips are chapped from cutting 15 lbs. But I went to the dermatologist, got cleared and today they decided my lips were still chapped and I can't fight. I'm sorry. The fight's not happening. Thank you guys for all the support and I'll be back.https://www.instagram.com/p/BjgAhecFryr/?utm_source=ig_twitter_share&igshid=195c1in043f8i Aguilar coach and cornerman Din Thomas confirmed to MMA Junkie that chapped lips were the reason for the fight falling through.
“The commission doctor saw her lips and thought it may have been some sort of infection. They rushed her to a dermatologist as soon as she stepped off the scale. The dermatologist said nothing was wrong and cleared her to fight – gave her a doctor’s note and everything. Now today, the commission doctor saw her and told her she can’t fight.”New York, New York. We've heard it all now.
