Jay Rodriguez puts forward his contender for goal of the weekend to seal Southampton win

Pick that one out

Let’s be honest, Bournemouth vs Southampton – despite being a south coast derby – probably wasn’t the most mouthwatering of this Super Sunday’s football fixtures.

But with the majority of us making time in our afternoon to watch Arsenal’s visit to Manchester City at 4pm, Jay Rodriguez smashed home a goal worthy of any football match taking place this weekend.

The 27-year-old, who has been plagued with injury problems in recent seasons, had already given Southampton a 2-1 lead not long after half-time and sealed the three points with five minutes to go with a memorable hit from outside of the Bournemouth box.

Nathan Redmond’s attempts to break into the opposition area were halted, and the ball ricocheted in the direction of Rodriguez. Bouncing behind him, the former Burnley man hit the ball on the turn, sending it sailing high into the goal.

And yes, of course the commentator described it as a ‘Christmas cracker’.

Make sure you check it out on Match of the Day 2 later tonight.

The victory for Southampton lifts them to seventh in the Premier League table, overtaking West Brom following their defeat at home to Manchester United on Saturday evening.

They host Tony Pulis’ side on New Year’s Eve, days after they welcome Tottenham to St Mary’s on December 28.
