Man City have only made two signings this summer

Jamie Carragher believes that Manchester City’s squad is in a weaker position than it was last season.

Pep Guardiola’s side start off the new campaign off the back of winning a historic Treble for the first time and begin their Premier League title defence away to Burnley.

Following the end of another incredible season there have been changes to the squad with senior members like Riyad Mahrez and Ilkay Gundogan leaving the club.

Man City have only made two signings so far – Josko Gvardiol and Mateo Kovacic – but are in talks with West Ham to sign Lucas Paqueta and are expected to return with a second bid for the Brazilian after their first was rejected.

Jeremy Doku of Rennes has also been linked with a move to the Etihad Stadium.

While Carragher still thinks City are by far and away the best team in the league, he still reckons that City’s squad isn’t as strong as last year’s and that they will miss the goals of their Treble-winning captain, Gundogan.

“I actually think, right now, they are slightly weaker,” he told Sky Sports.

“Obviously the transfer window hasn’t finished and I’m sure there will be more business done for Manchester City.

“When you think where they were last season, especially with Gundogan.

“Yes they brought in Kovacic but the goals that Gundogan and Mahrez bring – they haven’t quite replaced that.”

He added: “Even if they didn’t add anyone else to the squad and kept it as it is, I’d still say Man City were favourites for the title.”
