Jamie Carragher says Liverpool need another Sadio Mane and supporters know just the man

Fits the description

Jamie Carragher has identified the kind of player Liverpool need to sign this summer and supporters have gone ahead and named the perfect candidate.

Carragher has pointed to the importance of bringing in a versatile, energetic forward who could provide cover for the Reds’ free-scoring front three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane.

Manager Jurgen Klopp would have a serious problem to contend with if any member of his side’s current attacking trio sustained a long-term injury and Carragher insisted that it’s crucial to sign a player who can not just act as a sensible deputy to one of the front three but to offer the ability to slot into several positions and systems.

“We don’t need a striker,” Carragher told Goal.com. “We need a multi-functional player. Another Mane, if you like.

“You could probably play Mane up front if you wanted to. He can play left, right or up front, like someone like Alexis Sanchez can.

“There’s no point bringing in a striker to cover for Firmino and sitting him on the bench. You need someone who can come in and cover for one or two players with quality, start games when he needs to and compete with the others.

“As a manager it’s difficult. You bring in a squad player, and you try to find someone who is good enough to replace your starters, but happy not playing every week. There aren’t many of those players around!”

It didn’t take long for one name to begin doing the rounds on social media as supporters identified the perfect man for the job.

Fans suggested that Crystal Palace talisman Wilfried Zaha would fit the bill.

Zaha was recently singled out for particular praise by Robbie Savage for the impact he’s had on a Palace side that would have otherwise probably struggled this season.

He’s pacy, he runs aggressively at defenders, he’s full of energy and he can play in several positions. And Liverpool fans would only love for Zaha to prove himself at Anfield after struggling to make a significant impact at Manchester United as a youngster.
