Barcelona defeated Tottenham Hotspur last night courtesy of goals from Philippe Coutinho, Ivan Rakitic and Lionel Messi to seal a comfortable (in parts) victory at Wembley. Come the final whistle it was Barca's Argentine wizard who rightly received the plaudits. Few could argue with this appraisal. Messi was superb on the night, displaying his traditional brand of 'how the fuck does he do that?' football from the beginning, and absolutely bamboozling the Spurs players every step of the way. The goal of the night though undoubtedly came from Rakitic, the man who has performed admirably at the Camp Nou since being given the thankless task of replacing the irreplaceable Xavi. Running into the box after Philippe Coutinho responded to a Hugo Lloris save to creatively lob the ball to the edge of the box, the Croatian midfielder got his body over the ball with the sort of form that would delight your school football coaches who spent years trying in vain to teach you to do the same. He also connected with the ball spectacularly to send the ball careering into the top corner, where it hit the post and ricocheted back into the net past the hapless Lloris. The goal was good as it was with English commentary. To be honest, it's good without commentary. But you know what makes it even better? This eccentric Dutch commentator excitedly watching it. I could try and explain to you how this fella tries and fails to recreate the sound of a rocket and as a result ends up being more entertaining than any accurate rocket sound ever could be, but I won't.
