Italy call up player named Lasagna to squad for UEFA Nations League

Lasagna is set to bring a layered approach to the team

The UEFA Nations League returns during this international break, offering nations the opportunity to engage in some competitive football rather than the mundane and unattractive friendlies of old.

While some people are against the Nations League (Jurgen Klopp described it as “the most senseless competition in the world”), it does at least give us a break from the partisanship of domestic football for a short while.

It also gives us a story like this: Italy have called up a player called Lasagna to their squad.

Yes, Lasagna, Kevin Lasagna to be exact. He is a striker for Udinese in Serie A who is pretty good, to be fair, and just so happens to have a brilliantly Italian name.

He has been called in to replace Valencia’s Simone Zaza – a man who is noticeably not named after a pasta dish – and could well make his debut against Ukraine on October 10.
