The match was also delayed by 90 minutes
Austria and Denmark’s players were left shocked after the pitch caved in during their UEFA Nations League’s clash at the Ernst Happel Stadion on Monday night.
The game was initially delayed for 90 minutes because of a blackout, with fans using the lights on their phones to help see through the darkness as the floodlights bizarrely went out.
Given the lack of light, kick-off was pushed back until 10:15 pm local time, with the match not finishing until after midnight.
When the Nations League encounter eventually got underway, Denmark secured a 2-1 victory over Ralf Rangnick’s side – inflicting a first defeat on them since the former Manchester United interim manager took charge. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Jens Stryger Larsen both got on the scoresheet for the home side.

The pitch appeared to cave in on itself
While the game passed by with no major issues, it wasn’t until the referee had blown for full-time that yet another issue showed itself. The pitch appeared to cave in with a huge sinkhole developing right near the centre circle.
The players quickly alerted the officials, but, thankfully, the game had already finished and no one was injured as a result of the hole.
Denmark winger Andreas Skov Olsen showed how deep it was by putting one leg in the hole, with almost half of his leg fitting in it.

Denmark continue to impress
The victory for Kasper Hjulmand’s side put them at the top of League A Group 1, with two wins from two games after they also overcame reigning World Cup champions France.
Christian Eriksen featured for his country for the third time since he went into cardiac arrest during last summer’s Euro 2020 tournament.
The 30-year-old, who played for Brentford last season, is currently without a club after his contract with the Bees came to an end. Thomas Frank is keen to see the former Tottenham Hotspur man return to the Brentford Community Stadium next season, however, Eriksen is attracting interest from a number of other top-flight clubs.
