Heung-min Son is two wins away from avoiding military service

The Spurs winger must win the Asia Games to avoid having to do military service for South Korea, and they've reached the semi-finals

South Korea have reached the semi-finals of the Asia Games

Heung-min Son is only two wins away from attaining exemption from serving in the South Korean army.

South Korean men are expected to carry out a mandatory two year spell in the military, which the Spurs winger has not yet done, and he could soon be granted exemption if he wins the Asia Games.

A gold medal from either the Asia Games or the Olympics is required to get out of doing military service.

South Korea beat Uzbekistan 4-3 in dramatic circumstances to reach the semi-finals, winning 4-3 in extra time via a penalty that Son couldn’t bring himself to watch.

Son will lead his team into a semi-final against either Syria or Vietnam on Wednesday as his pursuit of a gold medal – and freedom – continues.
