Harry Kane has broken his silence as England depart Germany empty handed after losing the Euro 2024 final.
The Three Lions fell behind just after half-time through Nico Williams and although Cole Palmer levelled, it wasn’t to be for Gareth Southgate’s side as Spain bagged a late winner.
It marks the second time in a row that England have failed at the last hurdle in a European Championships after losing on penalties to Italy in 2021.
Kane had come in for some heavy criticism throughout the tournament with questions about his fitness circulating in the media. However, he ended the tournament as joint Golden Boot winner as one of six players who scored three goals during the campaign.
Kane took to X this morning to share his feelings on the loss. He said: “Heartbroken we couldn’t achieve what we worked so hard to. It was a long tournament and I’m so proud of the boys and staff for getting to the final.
“Ultimately we fell short of our target and will have to live with that but as we always do we will pick ourselves up, dust ourselves down and be ready to fight again in an England shirt.”

It wasn’t just the press and pundits that criticised the England captain with many of the fans also calling for him to be dropped in the final few games.
Kane went on to thank them for their support regardless: “Thank you to all the fans that believed in us and supported us to the very end!”
The Bayern Munich forward is still waiting to get his hands on a major trophy for both club and country with five runners up medals to his name now.
He was substituted early in the final by Southgate with Ollie Watkins once again impressing and making an impact when he entered the game.
Kane only had one touch in the opposition box across both Euro finals.
