Goretzka joins Aston Villa on a free transfer after Bayern Munich exit

Aston Villa have completed the signing of Leon Goretzka on a free transfer, handing Unai Emery a 73-cap Germany international at no cost after the midfielder's eight-year spell at Bayern Munich came to an end this summer.

The 31-year-old had been a free agent since leaving the Allianz Arena, and admitted the decision took him some time. "I had a bit of long vacation, and it was a process to find out what I really wanted," he said. "From the first moment, I had a really good feeling, and I'm really happy to be here."

Why Goretzka picked Villa Park

Goretzka pointed to his first conversation with Emery as the moment the move made sense. "I had a good feeling from the first conversation with the coach. Aston Villa is a really big club," he said. "I want to help the team to achieve their goals and to bring my experience that I have from my whole career."

The prospect of a relentless English schedule appears to be part of the appeal. "I'm really looking forward to playing in these kinds of big games every few days, and this is probably the biggest difference to the Bundesliga, where you have only several great games with big opponents," he added.

A midfield that badly needed reinforcing

The timing is not accidental. Villa began the Premier League season with a chastening 4-0 defeat at Brighton on Sunday, and Emery is without Amadou Onana until next year after the Belgian suffered a knee injury at the World Cup this summer.

That has left a hole in a midfield already stripped back by a punishing few months. Youri Tielemans, the side's lynchpin, joined Manchester United in July. Defender Ezri Konsa went to Arsenal for an initial £51m, forward Morgan Rogers was sold to Chelsea for £117m, and left-back Lucas Digne returned to Paris St-Germain earlier this month. Emery has also been unable to guarantee that England striker Ollie Watkins will still be at Villa Park beyond the transfer deadline, with Al-Hilal interested from Saudi Arabia.

What Villa are actually getting

Plenty, on paper. Goretzka made 312 appearances for Bayern and scored 51 goals, winning seven league titles and the Champions League in 2020. He has 73 caps for Germany and played three times at this summer's World Cup. Before Bayern, he came through the German game with Bochum and Schalke.

Writing for BBC Sport, German football writer Constantin Eckner notes that for years Goretzka was a cornerstone of Bayern's midfield, but that in recent seasons the record German champions were not hiding their intention to sell him for the right price. He turned down a loan move to Galatasaray in 2024, and his sizeable wages in Munich ruled out a number of potential destinations.

For a club that has spent the summer selling, a free transfer of this pedigree is a rare piece of low-risk business — of a piece with the loan deal that brought Aaron Wan-Bissaka to Villa Park this month. Whether it also revives Goretzka's international career is the other bet Villa are making.
