He retained the yellow jersey after winning the penultimate phase
Geraint Thomas is all but guaranteed to be crowned the Tour de France champion tomorrow after retaining the yellow jersey in the penultimate stage of the race.
The Team Sky cyclist will become only the third Brit to ever win the Tour de France after Chris Froome, who boasts four Tour titles to his name, and Bradley Wiggins, who won in 2012.
Thomas' task was simple as he set off from Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle at 4:30pm local time: keep up the momentum and avoid crashing on slippery roads. He had a wobble after 12km, when he almost stacked bis bike, but from that moment on it was plain sailing, or cycling.
The Welshman was seen wiping away tears as he celebrated retaining the yellow jersey with his partner.
