A joyful Gary Neville expressed his delight at seeing Liverpool fail to win the Champions League in a series of posts on social media.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were beaten 1-0 by Real Madrid in Paris to end their hopes of winning a treble – with a second European final defeat in the space of four years.

Neville celebrated in the pub along with several other United fans

The former Manchester United defender, and boyhood fan of the club, celebrated the defeat in a pub on Saturday night.

Neville was alongside many others as they sang and danced to the song ‘Sit Down’ by the Manchester band, James.

On Sunday morning, Neville defended his actions in an Instagram story and said he was even celebrating Liverpool defeats when ‘Man United were good.’

He started the story off by saying: “Morning everyone, how are we this morning? Jubilant? [A] little bit.

“I love the messages that I’ve received this morning the most that say: ‘What have you reduced yourself to?’

“Let me make this really clear: I’ve always celebrated Liverpool losing, when we [Manchester United] when we were good! Let alone when we’re bad.”

Some fans weren’t happy with his celebrations

Despite the Sky Sports pundit’s defence, many felt that he lacked professionalism and questioned his need to post about his happiness.

“This is small time. It’s what Sunderland fans do to Newcastle. It’s what Man City fans used to do to Man Utd,” said one person.

“You’s (sic) used to play in these games & now you’re sat celebrating Liverpool losing one? It’s ok to be happy about it, they’re rivals, but to actively celebrate is small time.”

Another said: “When you cease being a player and you become a pundit, you need to elevate yourself from such amateur unprofessionalism.”
