Former UFC star Godofredo Pepey has been found dead in a Florida prison aged 38.
The Brazilian MMA fighter, whose real name is Godofredo Castro de Oliveira, was in prison awaiting trial after he was accused of domestic violence towards his wife Samara Mello.
He was arrested in June of this year.
According to the Mail, court reports regarding Pepey's case show he was charged with kidnapping, domestic violence by strangulation, witness tampering and battery against Mello.
The Mail also report that Broward Sheriff's Office — the body responsible for law enforcement and civil protection in the area of Pepey's arrest — told them that they are not currently investigating any foul play in relation to the fighter's death.
The exact cause of the 38-year-old's death is expected to be confirmed in due course, pending a final report by the Broward Medical Examiner's Office.
The lawyer of the fighter's wife has released a statement that reads: "The death of someone in custody is a serious matter.
"There are procedures that must be followed by the American authorities, and any and all news will be released by those authorities.
"Until then, I ask for respect for the family, his wife Samara, and that you avoid malicious comments and speculation, so as not to cause further suffering."
Pepey is best known for competing in the globally-renowned UFC fighting competition 11 times from 2012-2018.
His overall professional MMA (mixed-martial-arts) record is 14 wins and seven losses.
