Former Premier League striker saw prize horse given away by drunken mate

He was just horsing around...

Former Newcastle striker Faustino Asprilla has always been known as a bit of a character.

The Colombian international is best known on these shores for his spell with the Magpies, but it’s because of another animal that he’s found himself in the headlines again.

Asprilla, who once went AWOL when faced with a proposed move to Darlington, had his prize horse Lucas do the same thing (go AWOL, that is, not almost sign for Darlington).

The 45-year-old offered a reward of more than £1,000 for the horse, who is valued at £43,500, before later discovering that a friend – who had been given permission to ride the animal at a local fair in South America – gave Lucas away while drunk.

Thankfully, Lucas has been returned safe and well after nearly four months. Police have made no comment regarding suggestions of horseplay.

Still, it gives us a chance to enjoy this again…
