It's a joke that's done the rounds countless times as rival fans discovered that reminding Reds supporters of that fact is quite an efficient way of getting under their skin.
And Buttner, who recently made the move from Dynamo Moscow to SBV Vitesse, is also quite fond of rolling out that line when his legacy at Old Trafford is brought into question.
"I searched for it, I have played 30 games for United," Buttner told De Telegraaf.
"Who can say they became PL champions? I can. Even Steven Gerrard can't say that. I became a better footballer, played in the CL quarter-final against Robben's Bayern Munich.
"No one will ever take that away from me."
Buttner, while he may not go down as the most memorable United player in history, looks back fondly on his time in Manchester and even committed to permanently marking his tenure as a United player.
"I debuted in number 28 at United, scored and assisted," he added. "Since then I kept number 28, I even have it tattooed on my wrist."Explore more on these topics:
