Southgate isn't set to be out of work for long

Southgate called time on his eight years in charge just days after the Three Lions' Euro 2024 defeat against Spain.

The 53-year-old managed England 102 times and across four international tournaments, two of which he took the national team to a final.

In an emotional statement to fans, Southgate said "it’s time for change, and for a new chapter" before hailing supporters as "the best fans in the world".

Southgate to be offered new-look job role

While Southgate is probably set to take some time away before returning to any form of management, there is still a chance he could land himself some work almost immediately after his resignation.

According to the Daily Mail, ITV are keen on approaching Southgate about becoming a pundit on their live coverage of games however it remains to be seen if he will accept or not.

There will be plenty of interest in his next steps however.

Manchester United were heavily linked with appointing the 53-year-old before Erik ten Hag was given a new contract following an end-of-season review.

Should United have a poor start it wouldn't be a surprise to see his name once again become linked with the hot-seat at Old Trafford, with INEOS billionaire Sir Jim Ratcliffe a huge fan of his.

Who will replace Southgate?

Of course it's still very early days, but several names have been thrown up already.

Eddie Howe of Newcastle United appears to be the frontrunner for the job while current Under-21s boss Lee Carsley has also been linked in what would be the same route Southgate took in getting the top job.

Out of work managers linked have included Graham Potter as well as some overseas options like Mauricio Pochettino and even more surprisingly, Thomas Tuchel.

Outside mentions have even included Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp but there may be a hesitation from the FA to appoint a foreign manager given their last experience under Fabio Capello.
