He was convicted of sex offences spanning 25 years
Former Newcastle United youth football coach George Ormond has been jailed for 20 years today after being found guilty of 35 charges of indecent assault.
He was also found guilty on one charge of indecency in the trial at Newcastle Crown Court, in which the jury was told of Ormond's sexual abuse of teenage boys over a period of decades.
The court was told that Ormond, a youth coach at grassroots levels in the 1970s and 1980s, abused his power and "manipulated his position" by making it clear to young players that he could block their career progression if they stood up to him.
In a statement, Detective Sergeant Mick Patterson said: "I think George Ormond believes that what he did was acceptable and part of what happened in football."
"George Ormond was a prominent football coach between 1975 and 1999 and he used that position to act as a predatory paedophile to abuse young men."
