Manchester United are reportedly planning to offer David De Gea a short-term deal to return to the club.

De Gea left United in the summer after 12 years at the club following the decision to reverse the offer of an extension to his deal.

Erik ten Hag then opted to sign Andre Onana in the summer however the former Ajax ‘keeper has had a mixed start to life at Old Trafford.

Despite improvements in recent weeks, United are set to lose the 27-year-old in January as a result of the Africa Cup of Nations, leaving Tom Heaton and Altay Bayindir as their only senior options, however neither have made an appearance so far.

According to The Sun, in light of their goalkeeping issue, the club will offer De Gea a deal to compensate for Onana’s absence – who could miss as many as eight games while featuring for Cameroon.

The Spaniard is still without a club but has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia while it also remains to be seen if De Gea himself would welcome a return to Old Trafford so soon.

After his penalty save heroics on Tuesday, Ten Hag praised Onana for his performance and improvement of late.

He said: “He knows his levels didn’t match his skills before. He could do better. [He had] a very good performance on Saturday. Today, as well. Also, don’t forget that brilliant save just after half-time in the counter-attack. Of course, one of his skills is he’s a very good penalty-saver.”
