It's the end of an era for Ajax

It's a brand known around the world, and perhaps one of the most recognisable emblems in sport. Amsterdamsche Football Club Ajax - to give them their full name - were named after the mythological Greek hero Ajax, who fought against Troy in the Trojan War. It is his face we see today in line drawing on the famous Dutch club's badge. Just as iconic as the crest is the famous Ajax kit, with its white sleeves and dashing block of red on the body. It has helped to establish Ajax as one of the most recognisable and loved clubs in the game. So much so that they have broadened their reach to places far beyond their Amsterdam home, to break into developing footballing powers and scoop up exciting local talent. But things change, and a part of Ajax history is disappearing forever. Ajax Cape Town were formed in 1999 when two local teams - Seven Stars and Cape Town Spurs - were merged as part of the Dutch club's plan to expand their worldwide talent-feeder network to South Africa. Nicknamed 'Urban Warriors', Ajax Cape Town incorporated the AFC Ajax footballing philosophy and dedication to youth development, and it reaped dividends. The likes of Daylon Claasen, Eyong Enoh, Thulani Serero and most famously Steven Pienaar have all graduated to their Dutch mother club. But now Ajax Cape Town have a new identity - or rather an old one. The club have gone full circle and rebranded as Cape Town Spurs under new ownership. The name was approved by the Premier Soccer League on Thursday. In spite of ending their 21-year association with AFC Ajax, they still retain some similarities. The famous red and white will continue as club colours, whilst the new logo is based on the mythical Greek warrior Ajax's helmet. Let's hope they continue to unearth exciting new South African talent.
