Fans baffled as Lee Carsley hands shock England call up to uncapped Premier League defender

Strange one…

England football fans have been left baffled as Lee Carsley hands a shock England call up to an uncapped Premier League defender who plays for the current second-lowest placed team in the league.

As we move into November, the international break is once again fast approaching, much to the annoyance of many club-over-country believers.

However, it has to be conceded that the pause in league football does have its perks, mainly for Man United fans who don’t have to watch their team play, and for the odd call up for some of the smaller teams in the league.

This is certainly the case for Saints fans who have two of their players called up, despite sitting a lowly nineteenth in the Premier League table.

For reference, once again Man United have zero players called up to the England squad.

The two players in question are experienced goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale and first time England camp attendee Taylor Harwood-Bellis.

The 22-year-old defender has impressed so far this season despite his team’s struggles, earning himself a call up to Lee Carsley’s squad for upcoming games against Greece and Ireland in the Nations League.

The full squad is as follows:

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Southampton)

Defenders: Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool), Levi Colwill (Chelsea), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Lewis Hall (Newcastle), Taylor Harwood-Bellis (Southampton), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Rico Lewis (Man City), Kyle Walker (Man City).

Midfielders: Jude Bellingham (Real Madrid), Phil Foden (Man City; Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid), Morgan Gibbs-White (Nottingham Forest), Angel Gomes (Lille), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Declan Rice (Arsenal).

Forwards: Anthony Gordon (Newcastle), Jack Grealish (Man City), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Noni Madueke (Chelsea), Bukayo Saka (Arsenal), Dominic Solanke (Spurs), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa).

England play Greece away on 14 November and Ireland at Wembley on 17 November.
