Manchester United’s hopes of a top four finish were all but ended by Arsenal at The Emirates on Sunday afternoon.
A deflected Granit Xhaka goal, swiftly followed by Danny Welbeck’s close-range header, saw Arsene Wenger’s side win 2-0, keeping alive their own hopes of finishing the season in the Champions League places.
On Wednesday evening, Arsenal added another three points to their tally as they beat Southampton 2-0 at St Mary’s. This leaves them within three points of Manchester City in fourth place, and four points off Liverpool – although they do have a game in hand over Jürgen Klopp’s side. Should either of these northwest clubs slip up in their remaining games, Arsenal are well placed to take advantage.
The win also means that Arsenal have now leapfrogged Europa League-chasing Manchester United, only days on from taking their 25-match Premier League unbeaten run.
As impressive as such an unbeaten spell might sound, United’s incredible ability to repeatedly draw their home games has meant that they’ve actually made no ground at all on the teams above them. Having been mocked for spending such a long duration of time in sixth place earlier in the season, you can probably guess what people were saying as Arsenal’s latest victory sent them back there…
