England name some unlikely starters for San Marino game

Tom Victor

England manager Roy Hodgson is using the game against San Marino to give two players their full international debuts.

Jonjo Shelvey and Jamie Vardy will both start for their country for the first time, while John Stones has been handed just his third England start.

Shelvey and Vardy have both started the season strongly as their clubs – Swansea and Leicester respectively – find themselves in the top four of the Premier League.

Stones, meanwhile, was the subject of an eight-figure bid from Chelsea but ultimately ended the transfer window as an Everton player.

England are six points clear at the top of their Euro 2016 qualifying group, and victory over the minnows will all but seal their place in the summer’s finals.
