Darron Gibson has been handed a trial at Wigan Athletic after he was released by Sunderland AFC back in March following drink driving charges.

In May, he was sentenced to a two-year community order and received a 40 month driving ban.

The former Manchester United midfielder has not played competitively since new year’s day, but has been handed the chance to revive his career at Wigan, who secured promotion to the Championship last season.

Gibson is no stranger to controversy, having been secretly filmed in a bar as he made some unsavoury comments about his Sunderland teammates in July 2017.

The 30-year-old has won 27 caps for the Republic of Ireland, having opted to play for them over Northern Ireland.
