Cristiano Ronaldo named in Real Madrid squad for Super Cup against Manchester United

Ronaldo has only just returned to training...

Cristiano Ronaldo might be facing former club Manchester United on Tuesday night after all.

Ronaldo has only recently returned to training with Real Madrid after his involvement with Portugal at the Confederations Cup earlier in the summer. As a result, he was expected to miss his side’s European Super Cup meeting with United in the Macedonian capital of Skopje this week.

However, a tweet from the European champions has now confirmed that Ronaldo is part of their 24-man squad.

Given that he has only recently returned to training, it seems unlikely that the 32-year-old will play a full 90 minutes for Zinedine Zidane’s side, although his inclusion in the squad suggests he will feature at some stage.

Gareth Bale, who now appears set to stay with Real after speculation linking him with a return to the Premier League, has also been named in the squad. The Welshman had limped out of a training session towards the end of the Spanish champions’ American preseason tour but appears to have recovered.

United last appeared in the European Super Cup final in 2008, when they lost to Zenit St Petersburg. Real Madrid won the trophy in Trondheim last year, defeating Sevilla 3-2.
