Conor McGregor soars in UFC pound-for-pound rankings but still can’t get past one man

He won't be happy

Patrick McCarry

Who is going to break this to the UFC featherweight and lightweight champion?

The pound-for-pound UFC rankings are usually updated on the Monday night or Tuesday morning after a major pay-per-view event.

Perhaps there has been a lot of wrangling and debate as the latest P4P rankings were only released late last night.

There is good news and bad news for McGregor.

As champion, he now sits above two divisions stacked with talent. He has also climbed two places in the P4P rankings.

McGregor is only in second place in the overall rankings, however. The top dog remains men’s flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson.

Mighty Mouse [MMA: 24-2-1, UFC: 12-1-1] is on a 10-fight winning streak that includes eight successful title defences. Johnson has gushed about McGregor in the past and was doing likewise after The Notorious did a UFC 205 number on Eddie Alvarez:

McGregor’s P4P rise has come at the expense of two men that have not fought in recent months – Dominick Cruz and Daniel Cormier, the respective bantamweight and light heavyweight champions. Interim featherweight champion Jose Aldo is fifth.

The big mover in the P4P rankings is a new arrival in the top 10 – Cris Cyborg. Khabib Nurmagomedov is another newcomer, at 15th. He is now listed as the No.1 lightweight contender.

There is no place in the P4P rankings for Jon Jones [banned until summer 2017] and Ronda Rousey [inactive since November 2015].
