Police have revealed what caused the fatal car crash in which two people died and boxer Anthony Joshua was injured.
Monday’s tragic accident on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Nigeria caused the deaths of Joshua’s close friends, Sina Ghami and Kevin Latif Ayodele.
Nigerian police have now confirmed that a tyre blowout caused the horrific car crash, in which the 36-year-old British heavyweight boxer was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that hit a stationary truck.
Early investigations showed the Lexus had been travelling along the highway from Lagos to Sagamu when it “experienced a tyre burst due to excessive speed and then lost control”, according to Police Commander Babatunde Akinbiyi of Nigeria’s Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE).
Joshua has been transferred to the Duchess International Hospital in Lagos, one of Nigeria’s best hospitals, where he will remain in their care for “at least a couple more days”, as per the Daily Mail.
The former world heavyweight champion was reported to be in a stable condition as he was pulled from the wreckage, while his close friends were reported to have been killed instantly.
But Joshua’s injuries may be more serious than first thought, the Daily Mail reported on Tuesday.
He may have possible rib and knee problems, according to “an individual in his inner circle” who spoke to the Mail.
However, according to the latest reports, Joshua’s condition remains stable.
Commissioner of Ogun State Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, told reporters Joshua remained in a “stable” condition after being taken to hospital and is not expected to require surgery on his injuries.
Joshua had shared a video on social media that showed him enjoying a game of table tennis with Ayodele, known to close friends as ‘Latz’, just hours before the accident.
‘Latz’ was a long-time friend of Joshua’s and was part of the AJ team going all the way back to his maiden world title victory in 2016, while Ayodele was Joshua’s personal trainer.
