Big names miss out on MLS FIFA 16 cover

Seven former Premier League players are in contention for the MLS cover of FIFA 16 – but Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are nowhere to be seen.

Fans have been invited to vote for their favourite player – with one candidate from each MLS club on the ballot.

But Gerrard has missed out to fellow LA Galaxy new boy Giovani Dos Santos, while Lampard (and Andrea Pirlo) have been passed over in favour of New York City FC top-scorer David Villa.

But we could still see an Englishman on the cover – New York Red Bulls’ former Manchester City striker Bradley Wright-Phillips.

at StubHub Center on September 28, 2014 in Los Angeles, California.

As well as Premier League flops Wright-Phillips and Dos Santos, and massive stars Villa and Kaka, there are a few inclusions which may come as a surprise to British fans.

Former Norwich striker Kei Kamara is the league’s top scorer, so it makes sense that he is the one contender for current club Columbus Crew, while Ireland striker Kevin Doyle has hit the ground running since joining the Colorado Rapids.

As for the other three to have graced England’s top-flight? Maurice Edu managed just one league game in his three seasons at Stoke and Jermaine Jones lasted just six months at Blackburn, while Benny Feilhaber was part of Derby’s worst ever Premier League team, yet all three have had a much better time of it stateside.
