Arsenal star called up to Spain squad for Euro 2016

Tom Victor

Arsenal’s Héctor Bellerín has earned himself a call-up to Spain’s Euro 2016 squad following an injury to Dani Carvajal.

Bellerín only made his senior international debut this week, but has impressed enough to be named as one of only a handful of foreign-based players in Vicente Del Bosque’s squad.

Carvajal and Juanfran were the original picks at right-back, but the Real Madrid man was forced off with a hip injury during the Champions League final.

That means Bellerín, Arsenal’s only representative in the 2015/16 Premier League team of the year, will take his place in the squad which will face Croatia, Turkey and the Czech Republic in their Euro 2016 group.

Bellerín is one of eight Arsenal players due to travel to France for the tournament, alongside Petr Cech, Olivier Giroud, Laurent Koscielny, Mesut Özil, Aaron Ramsey, Tomas Rosicky and Jack Wilshere.

Several of his fellow Premier League players feature in Del Bosque’s preliminary squad, and David De Gea, Cesar Azpilicueta,  Cesc Fàbregas, David Silva and Pedro will all hope to make the final 23.

Spain have confirmed 19 members of their squad, with the remainder set to be named before today’s deadline. Atlético Madrid star Saúl Ñíguez is among those whose place is thought to be hanging in the balance.
