Arteta asks for advice from Arsene Wenger ahead of Spurs game

Luke Davies

The Arsenal boss has called upon the legendary manager’s expertise ahead of kick-off.

Speaking to the press, the Spaniard said:

“I have spoken to him (Arsene Wenger) a few times.

“There were certain topics about how they won it and the later stages.”

Arteta played under Arsene Wenger for half a decade and maintains a close relationship as he continues his quest for Premier League glory.

The 42-year-old spoke positively about rival manager Ange Postecoglou despite needing to win away to Spurs to keep their title charge on track.

“I’m really impressed with what he’s done and also prior to that, because I knew him when he was in the Australian national team, and when he was in Japan as well, I followed him when he was at Celtic, and he’s always been super clear with a really clear direction and identity of how his teams play, and I love the way his teams play. So, I think he’s been very good.”

Arteta has history at the Tottenham Hotspurs’ Stadium; his side fell short two years ago effectively ending their hopes for a top-four place. Aside from this Arteta boasts a mixed record in North London Derby’s as a manager. He has led his side to four victories, three defeats and one draw with a 1.63 points-per-match average.

“That was a very particular match, with many situations but certainly we learned, we tried to evolve from there, we tried to get a squad that was better equipped. We all had experiences that hopefully helped us to develop and be better and on Sunday we will have to show it again.”

Now, Arsenal are more experienced and arguably stronger as a unit. They have impressed for much of the season but dropped points recently in a shocking home defeat to Aston Villa. Most recently, they destroyed Chelsea 5-0 at the Emirates in a classy performance.

The Gooners sit one point above Manchester City, who have played a game less. Arsenal can go four points clear with a win as City play later in the day.

Spurs have their own ambitions and will be motivated by Aston Villa dropping points at home to Chelsea yesterday evening. They currently sit five points adrift of the Villains but have played three fewer games.
